How should I use these materials?
The Summary of Harmful Teachings
Are you concerned about the materials being shared in your church, the books in your church’s library, or the things your pastor has said from the pulpit? This is a great discussion tool to bring to them to start to change the conversation about sex in your community.
Many people promote harmful teachings not because they actually believe them, but because they have never been told there is another way. Most pastors, we have found, take the charge of shepherding the sheep quite seriously and when the research is in front of them, they are willing to listen so that they can do their best to care for the sheep. I hope this document helps you if you’re in a church that promotes any of these harmful teachings, whether to youth or to adults.
The Rubric of Healthy Sexuality
This rubric was created so that lay congregants, pastors, authors, and event coordinators can have a “cheat sheet” of red flags for harmful teachings. This rubric is really only for teachings about sex, but if you’re having a Bible Study on a book about sex, or if a marriage group in your church is reading a marriage book that has a chapter on sex, use this rubric to make sure none of the teachings that lead to lower orgasm rates, worse sexual and marital satisfaction, and higher rates of sexual pain are present.
The Scorecard
This is where you can see where the books on your shelf, the books in your church library, the books you and your friends were planning on reading together fall in terms of that rubric. Our scorecard is hosted on Google Sheets so that you can see any updates or changes we make in real time, so make sure to check back every few months or so for updates. All the quotes, page numbers, and other citations will be included in the scorecard so you can see for yourself where the books went wrong.
